Basketball season tips off this week

Both TVCC basketball teams begin the 2009-10 season this week.
Just as October has given way to November, football season gives way to basketball season this week at Trinity Valley Community College.
Both the women’s and men’s teams are scheduled to tip off the 2009-10 season. The Cardinals take to the floor first, opening tonight in Fort Worth against the Texas Wesleyan JV. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Lady Cardinal, who are ranked fifth nationally, play their first game on the road Wednesday in Hillsboro against Hill College at 6 p.m. It will mark the coaching debut of Bill Damuth, who had served as an assistant at the college to both Kurt Budke and Michael Landers for a combined eight years.
Fourth-year coach Pat Smith’s Cardinals are also scheduled to be in action Wednesday at home against Elevate AAU. Game time for their home opener at Cardinal Gym is 8 p.m.
The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to host the TVCC Classic Friday and Saturday. TVCC plays Neosho Community College at 7 p.m. Friday and No. 9-ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Panola College is also participating in the classic. The Fillies play NEO at 5 p.m. Saturday and Neosho at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Cardinals return to action at home Sunday against El Centro Community College. Game time is 4 p.m.
The TVCC men are coming off a 21-11 season and have been picked to finish second behind Navarro in the Region XIV Conference North Zone. The Lady Cardinals were 28-8 last year and have been tabbed as the favorite to win a ninth straight conference championship.
General admission tickets for home games are $3 and are available at the door.
