TVCC tops McLennan, 89-53; Cardinals down SFA JV

The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals hit 11 three-pointers en route to an 89-53 win over the McLennan Highlassies Wednesday night at Cardinal Gym.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Lady Cardinals (5-3). Head Coach Bill Damuth’s squad started the season 4-0 before going on a road trip to Mississippi and Florida, where they finished 1-3 — including a pair of losses to nationally-ranked Pensacola (No. 13) and Gulf Coast (No. 1).

TVCC is ranked No. 10 in the nation this week.

The Highlassies (3-4) turned the ball over 10 times over the first 11 minutes, sparking a 15-3 Lady Cardinal run. Gloria Brown’s bucket — two of her game-high 23 points on the night — gave TVCC a 21-9 lead midway through the half.

The Lady Cardinals got a late first-half push from 6-1 post Marcisa McMillan, who nailed four threes in the final 5:35 to give her team a 39-29 lead at the half. McMillan finished with 22 points, including six three-pointers.

TVCC spliced together an overwhelming 37-9 run over an eight-minute span to put the game away in the second half.

The Lady Cardinals return to action Saturday at Weatherford for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. They play their next game at Cardinal Gym next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., hosting Lon Morris in the Region XIV Conference opener.

TVCC men 99,

SFA JV 74

The Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals will carry a 6-0 record into their conference opener after a 99-74 win over the Stephen F. Austin State University JV squad Tuesday night at Cardinal Gym.

Coach Pat Smith’s Cardinals are scheduled to tip off Region XIV Conference action Saturday at home against Tyler Junior College. Game time is 4 p.m.

Six Cardinals scored in double figures, led by Keandre Derrick’s 17 points.

Ernest “Stretch” Watson had 14 points for the Cardinals, followed by Isaiah Rusher with 13, Xavier Williams and Chris Blake 12 each and Adrian Forbes 10.

The Cardinals were up 52-39 at halftime.
